the meat man's story

Guy knocks on the door one lazy afternoon. I open it.

Guy: You the man of the house?
Me: Uhh..sure.
Guy: You like meat?
Me: Yea, I suppose I do.
Guy: Wait here.

Guy goes to his truck to fetch something...I look at Jay a bit confused. Guy comes back with a huge box and steps inside (without me asking him to). Opens box and places dozens of packages of vacuum sealed meat all over the floor...new york strip steak, fillets, bacon-wrapped fillets, etc.

Guy: I'm gonna sell you all of this at cost...the whole thing for $139.
Us: Sounds like a deal, but we don't really have $139.

After a bit of pressing...

Guy: Alright, the best I can offer you is one package of bacon-wraps...how about 30 bucks?

We look at each other.

Us: Well...alright.
Guy: Alright man. You guys college students?
Us: Yea, we go to Grove City College
Guy: Ah, ok. You guys do pills right? I got some vicodin 7.5's in the truck I'll sell you for $4 a piece.

(silence)

Guy: You guys smoke weed right? All I got's a joint but I'll sell you that too.

Silence. Jay goes to write a check for the one package of meat. Stops.

Jay: Can I just pay you cash? (good idea)
Guy: Yea man, whatever you want.

Pay the guy.

Guy: You sure you don't want any pills. Man, I was scared earlier...I got pulled over this morning and I had 'em in my pocket...I was all shakin' thinkin' the cop was gonna find them but he didn't. So after that I hid them in the meat. Listen, $3 a piece is the best I can do...
Us: Nah, man, that's ok.
Guy: Alright, well you guys have a good one.

Guy leaves...silence...did that really happen?

apologies and thoughts

I have to offer apologies to any blog readers out there. For some reason I just can't keep these damn animals from snagging my computer right out from under my nose. If its not some high-flying bird of prey, its a scampering little rodent. I woke up the other day and my computer was gone. Later on I'm walking home from class and look over too see this squirrel typing away on MY computer. I don't even know how the little bastard knew my log-in password. I gave him a kick and sent him sprawling...he seemed a little disoriented. Probly an easy target for any circling hawks in the area.

So I think everything's cool and then I take a look at my blog and see the scribblings of that foul beast. I'm tired of this...I'm going to tighten up security on my computer. Animals don't need to type blogs...they need to survive. Thankfully I, as a human, can both survive easily and type blogs at the same time. That's what makes me better than a squirrel...something to think about.

This thievery needs to stop...seriously.

Huck: Looky here, Jim; does a cat talk like we do?
Jim: No, a cat don't.
Huck: Well, does a cow?
Jim: No, a cow don't nuther.
Huck: Does a cat talk like a cow, or a cow talk like a cat?
Jim: No, dey don't.
Huck: It's natural and right for a cat and a cow to talk different from each other, ain't it?
Jim: Course.
Huck: And ain't it natural and right for a cat and a cow to talk different from us?
Jim: Why, mos' sholy it is.
Huck: Well, then, why ain't it natural and right for a Frenchman to talk different from us? You answer me that.
Jim: Is a cat a man, Huck?
Huck: No.
Jim: Well, den, dey ain't no sense in a cat talkin' like a man. Is a cow a man? Er is a cow a cat?
Huck: No, she ain't either of them.
Jim: Well, den, she ain't got no business to talk like either one er the yuther of 'em. Is a Frenchman a man?
Huck: Yes.
Jim: Well, den! Dad blame it, why doan' he talk like a man? You answer me dat!

...something else to think about...

the squirrel's story

Not much to eat today. Cold outside. Been cold for a while...wish it would get warm...more food when its warm. The white stuff came back and covered the ground. Just need some nuts, acorns or something. Been hangin' around outside the building where people go in and out three times a day...smells like gravy...never had gravy. Seems like a good place to hang. Runnin' around a field the other day and looked up, saw this hawk flyin' around. He spotted me and started comin' down. I hauled ass to a tree...made it just in time. Hate hawks. Got my brother a few months ago. Thinkin' about goin' south...wish it would get warm.

i haven't forgotten about being a rock star

"Meek young men grow up in libraries believing it their duty to accept the views which Cicero, which Locke, which Bacon, have given, forgetful that Cicero, Locked, and Bacon were only young men in libraries when they wrote these books."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Just now I sat here and thought to myself, "If only I could express my thoughts to some device that would not respond, but rather would allow me to type out slowly and carefully everything I have to say, therefore allowing me to really grasp it myself, before someone else comes along and rips it apart, leaving me not knowing where I started." Then I remembered this blog that I have. Neato.

As indicated in the title, I still want to be a rockstar. I have a band...I can even kind of play an instrument and sing. This guy sent me a message about a compilation project with local bands. The ultimate goal would be a professionally mastered cd featuring 20 bands from around here, including us, as well as massive exposure through Electronic Press Kits, myspace, and even a possible magazine cover. Of course it costs money. So immediately the red flag goes up. It must be just another scam where some independent record label promises you all kinds of success if you pay them a lot of money, and then you end up with a single copy of a crappy cd and never hear from anyone again. Or must it?

I've been around music for a while and I've seen such scams...but this one felt different. I actually talked to the guy who messaged me...nice guy. It all seems legit. But who wants to believe it could actually make any difference, especially since it costs a good sum of money? Well...I kind of do. The typical response is, "Well it sounds like a rip-off to me," which generally comes before I even get past the word "cost." But why not believe for a second? It's better than what we've got going on now...nothing.

P.S. Travis and I are tat brothers, which means we're hard-ass.
